Heat Pumps 101

One machine. Both seasons.

A heat pump looks just like an A/C, because it is one. In summer it cools like central air. In winter it runs in reverse, pulling heat from outdoor air and moving it inside. Moving heat is far cheaper than making it.

  • Do they work in our winters? Modern cold-climate models keep strong output well below freezing.
  • Dual fuel = best of both. Pair a heat pump with a gas furnace; the system automatically uses whichever is cheapest to run.
  • Rebates & tax credits. ENERGY STAR® heat pumps may qualify for federal credits and utility rebates, we track every program in Licking County.
Moore's honest take

For most local homes we recommend dual fuel: a variable heat pump up top, high-efficiency gas backup. Lowest bills in fall and spring, unbeatable gas warmth in January.

Furnace shopping, decoded

AFUE

Heating efficiency

The percent of every gas dollar that becomes heat. An 80% furnace sends 20 cents of every dollar up the flue. A 99% furnace keeps nearly all of it inside.

E/V

Blower type

In Lennox model names, E = constant-torque blower, V = variable-speed. Variable blowers are quieter, gentler on bills, and better at even temperatures.

2-STG

Stages

Two-stage furnaces cruise at low fire most of the winter, fewer temperature swings, less noise, better efficiency than single-stage on/off blasts.
